<img height="320" src="http://www.clipartheaven.com/clipart/transportation/cartoons/traffic_light_-_caution.gif" width="254" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just had one of those "Aha" moments where you feel like you're just getting everything right. Unfortunately it came after I got everything wrong.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was doing a Hebrew reading activity with my 4.5 year old when she got totally frustrated and threw a major tantrum. Now I know many of you are going to"tsk-tsk" me for doing such an activity with my preschooler, but let's just put that aside for a minute.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Her lack of frustration control and inability to handle being wrong EVER really worries me and we continue to try different strategies to deal with this, but after the above fiasco occurred I did none of those productive things.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I yelled and said everything I should NOT have said. Of course this helped no one and her tantrum escalated.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once I took some deep breaths, I walked into her room to console her with my tail between my legs and just held her until she relaxed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then the light bulb went off in my head.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I told her that we cannot continue this way and when she is starting to feel frustrated she has to let me know in a calm way. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hence our red light/green light strategy:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We decided to leave out red, yellow, and green construction papers on the table while we do our school work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We start with green on the table. Once she starts feeling frustrated, she puts out the yellow sheet. At that point she will ask for help or choose to pull out the red sheet to stop the activity completely.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's the yellow zone that we so needed. It's the zone where she can take a step back and evaluate her feelings and the situation at large. Leading to a state where her feelings can be validated and she can end an activity calmly. Otherwise we are back to tantrum land where both of us are in a heated red zone and nobody's feelings are acknowledged.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We put our plan into action with a similar reading activity and it worked beautifully! She owned the activity, she owned her feelings, and our lesson went smoothly.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What started out as a terrible mom moment turned into an awesome teaching moment for us all.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I bought two sets of these super cute magnetic wooden </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
numbers for less than $1.00 on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/SODIAL-Colorful-Magnetic-Numbers-Educational/dp/B008RRPLN4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378171772&sr=8-1&keywords=wooden+magnet+numbers">Amazon</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41r5t9xHxgL.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I then buried them in a plastic shoe bin filled with rice:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR53cq4Rynb8nIuYk23cnRfvDMpzkg8bKP1G45248GCCcGhRYZuI-r7zKgp0_6Myid8tGMUyE936a0NUHpnJ9j-H6seTuGG4fsGGaLlBH3G4Kk6eWdF9-xp3QRrj_Ke-ggUcNPjesaiw/s1600/IMG_4291.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR53cq4Rynb8nIuYk23cnRfvDMpzkg8bKP1G45248GCCcGhRYZuI-r7zKgp0_6Myid8tGMUyE936a0NUHpnJ9j-H6seTuGG4fsGGaLlBH3G4Kk6eWdF9-xp3QRrj_Ke-ggUcNPjesaiw/s640/IMG_4291.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The girls had a great time digging through the rice finding numbers </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
to match to their identical counterpart on the table. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My 4 year old said that next time it would be better if we had groups of items </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
set out on the table and she would find the number that matched how many were in each group.</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I then set out a bunch of different measuring cups and spoons on a sheet on the floor. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We explored how many scoops of the various cups it would take to fill one whole cup with rice.</div>

The best way to learn about an insect's life cycle is to watch it first hand. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A really easy and amazing insect to care for is a butterfly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We used the kit by Insect Lore and love it:</div>

If you look closely, there is a tiny and very hungry caterpillar on top of this leaf.</div>

We let most of the eggs out in a field in upstate NY and kept a few at home on a bed of wet paper towels and leaves.</div>

<img alt="Forgive and Forget Forgive and Forget" height="268" src="http://drlarafernandez.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Forgive-and-Forget.jpg" width="400" /><br />
Recently I noticed that my girls are having a hard time "letting go." They will stay angry a little longer than usual and continue to be upset even after all the apologies and talking it through has happened.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With Rosh Hashana just around the corner, I figured this was a perfect time to start a unit on foregiveness and the importance of not holding a grudge.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will start with some children books that address this topic.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Association of Jewish Libraries has a <a href="http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/Resources/AJLValuesfinder.aspx">value finder</a>. It is a great resource which searches for Jewish books by values/middot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the search results that came up for forgiveness:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="text-align: center; width: 600px;"><tbody>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've read tons of blogs talking about water beads and wish I purchased these little guys earlier. If you are not familiar with water beads they come as tiny balls (look at balls in center of picture below) and after sitting in a bowl of water for a few hours they expand to about the size of a marble.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Watching them grow is pretty cool, but their texture is the best part. They have a smooth and gelatinous texture. I got a ridiculously big bag of them from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078VY3G6/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">Amazon</a> for around $13.00. They will last us a lifetime.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078VY3G6/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1"><img height="320" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/618Kmlog5FL._SL1000_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The water beads are fun to play with just as they are. Throw them into a bucket or water table and have kids run the beads through their hands. Squishing them is fun too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I filled an aluminum tray with shaving cream and threw some water beads in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJNhqPxOxV7zJfFDKrHvTx2O3GIOiXr3aMZidTXKdwmJBKhLTGsazppG5NYA4kX9wPBOeiQO_3M9QiH9O4VVPeWJSGhtn6MhsGQ52M0feAgHBkL4At6vBeYamQohbfu4NRlF2dAWn9Zg/s1600/IMG_3895.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJNhqPxOxV7zJfFDKrHvTx2O3GIOiXr3aMZidTXKdwmJBKhLTGsazppG5NYA4kX9wPBOeiQO_3M9QiH9O4VVPeWJSGhtn6MhsGQ52M0feAgHBkL4At6vBeYamQohbfu4NRlF2dAWn9Zg/s400/IMG_3895.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The girls had fun searching through the cream to find the beads and spooning them out into cups. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyS5Ewn_Fk3C5YocEY719Mu1BP8b_okex21Y3m3FmDGCWHEd0_0ph9Xb7Il5zDW_AG7jB2VZzBLZkSgFofgk5pm-D-HlJFWde842l_5z5yLnaHwHbq26EGuYSyvdzSYAhCDLbeLBJjLg/s1600/IMG_3908.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyS5Ewn_Fk3C5YocEY719Mu1BP8b_okex21Y3m3FmDGCWHEd0_0ph9Xb7Il5zDW_AG7jB2VZzBLZkSgFofgk5pm-D-HlJFWde842l_5z5yLnaHwHbq26EGuYSyvdzSYAhCDLbeLBJjLg/s400/IMG_3908.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This can be turned into a science lesson on dehydration. If you leave the water beads out in the sun they will begin to shrink. When you soak them in water they will grow again.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Found this recipe for homemade finger paint on <a href="http://easiepeasie.blogspot.com/2010/07/homemade-finger-paints.html">Pinterest</a>:</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The creator of the recipe did mention that the texture might be lumpy if you add too much cornstarch and advised to thin with water.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">My paint did come out lumpy:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've mentioned loving this game before:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/MindWare-44204W-Imaginets/dp/B0037Z8DEK" target="_blank"><img height="320" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71ujhJbJmsL._SL1000_.jpg" width="302" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's a set of magnetic shapes and 50 picture cards which targets visual thinking and fine motor skills.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But here it is again with a little change. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pictures that come with the set are about the same size as an index card making it a little too challenging for very young kids to work off of.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So to help my little one out, I constructed a few of the pictured items onto a piece of copy paper and then outlined the shapes. So she now has a true to size picture to work on:<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVXP05rqFevhqPcL99DOPgPygSqf-JXBPtLzrZJm691aC0YP9Yq50WbNN5kQlQDHzL-_OrM52McCabUdaBYtchHvz_FiIH7T126wFX-vb2chAtZbQmLwkndM3n-CR88Q38zRJUWTSsAw/s1600/IMG_3922.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVXP05rqFevhqPcL99DOPgPygSqf-JXBPtLzrZJm691aC0YP9Yq50WbNN5kQlQDHzL-_OrM52McCabUdaBYtchHvz_FiIH7T126wFX-vb2chAtZbQmLwkndM3n-CR88Q38zRJUWTSsAw/s640/IMG_3922.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was actually really surprised and excited to see how nicely the girls engaged in cooperative play by helping each other figure out and find the pieces they needed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2Ov5PkF3l6g70-saKRL799GL166iRTGvFNgKO7NejZfAdoqWAObK1SibOFkxH_JESXovjwFaacgToM_yccNrlg0rhkOBE2KH-5-ysk3QW4yw5bCapFvPQQbc9wBo4eSeQa-wcaK5xrw/s1600/IMG_3930.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2Ov5PkF3l6g70-saKRL799GL166iRTGvFNgKO7NejZfAdoqWAObK1SibOFkxH_JESXovjwFaacgToM_yccNrlg0rhkOBE2KH-5-ysk3QW4yw5bCapFvPQQbc9wBo4eSeQa-wcaK5xrw/s640/IMG_3930.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can recreate this activity even without the Imaginets set. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can draw or print out pictures like the one below and have your kids glue on construction paper shapes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="house math game" src="http://www.shirleys-preschool-activities.com/images/shape-game-thumbnail.jpg" /></div>

Get this template <a href="http://www.shirleys-preschool-activities.com/support-files/shapes-template.pdf" target="_blank">here</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.prekinders.com/pattern-blocks/">Pre-kinders.com</a> has a great resource for printable pattern block animals like this one:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Using bottles and paper towel rolls I took out of our recycling trash, we were able to construct this makeshift marble run. (Ignore the ugliness that is my wall).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbIW9UGItYRvl5TGBr3sv0hmg_Npwc5BUCfNEDt68DwaeAzfZ0gcRvAgpLORik5ac51V5cvde4Xm8wPN9w9XP9UL_UqE1c7EDEfHTBjjznfZsfDz6kzBwxtA5lZVD9OydxHiNBv2pzTA/s1600/IMG_3824.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbIW9UGItYRvl5TGBr3sv0hmg_Npwc5BUCfNEDt68DwaeAzfZ0gcRvAgpLORik5ac51V5cvde4Xm8wPN9w9XP9UL_UqE1c7EDEfHTBjjznfZsfDz6kzBwxtA5lZVD9OydxHiNBv2pzTA/s640/IMG_3824.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut the bottoms off of plastic bottles and cut paper towel rolls in half then taped them to the wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lots of trial and error work needed before we got a successful marble run. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kids did need to climb a chair to insert marbles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For much older kids, you can use this activity to demonstrate a variety of concepts from physics including: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.03125px;">velocity</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: inherit; line-height: 19.03125px;">projectile motion</span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 19.03125px;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">acceleration</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 19.03125px;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">gravitational force</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 19.03125px;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">kinetic energy</span></div>
</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 19.03125px;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">potential energy</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here are some other fun ways to make your own marble run:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
cut open a pool noodle from <a href="http://spoonful.com/family-fun/marble-launch" target="_blank">Family Fun</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Marble Launch" src="http://static.spoonful.com/sites/default/files/styles/square_420x420/public/games/marble-launch-games-photo-420-FF0807EFDA01.jpg?itok=gT4StBU0" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">OR:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Use a cereal box and toilet paper rolls from <a href="http://thismamaloves.blogspot.com/2011/01/mommade-marble-run.html" target="_blank">This Momma Loves</a></span></div>

I am slowly realizing the different styles in which my girls approach the world around them. When my oldest was two she preferred to talk about and listen to books about things that interest her, while my current 2 year old would much rather get her whole body involved by touching or jumping or breaking the things that interest her.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So when thinking about introducing her to some letters, I initially presented them in the same way I did for my older daughter. I used books and pictures. That obviously was not for her.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pounding the letters with a hammer which led to the smashing of some Magna Tiles...totally for her!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVvU-JbFHfvgF4MdDXk74-PVWUihB3uwZokALHC3XJIjJOFJg_zdT9p2DducVZPGaylbnNmynDbqHV4lRqLJzU1Pa5p-lc28XkuNn0qNnTDaA1UdtBc0p2LBGBXN4TIcA5z1sXbz2HEA/s1600/IMG_3720.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVvU-JbFHfvgF4MdDXk74-PVWUihB3uwZokALHC3XJIjJOFJg_zdT9p2DducVZPGaylbnNmynDbqHV4lRqLJzU1Pa5p-lc28XkuNn0qNnTDaA1UdtBc0p2LBGBXN4TIcA5z1sXbz2HEA/s640/IMG_3720.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So we built Magna-Tile cubes, placed magnetic letters on them and she smashed the structures as I called out the letters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVQi5jStvIFgIeKeefEBz1FY7rzr8e4antss9Aqdxp1pAzkLqAgbTRbldWPDK3Ep7JHrx0rbeU1ULXOtNbrHn9q_OrIGgFHKP6W-mM5ePcTVp7bgbJ9-B_0NKmJt7sOVS3evgqb0sOXg/s1600/IMG_3723.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVQi5jStvIFgIeKeefEBz1FY7rzr8e4antss9Aqdxp1pAzkLqAgbTRbldWPDK3Ep7JHrx0rbeU1ULXOtNbrHn9q_OrIGgFHKP6W-mM5ePcTVp7bgbJ9-B_0NKmJt7sOVS3evgqb0sOXg/s640/IMG_3723.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She then turned the activity in to an exploration of what placements of her magnetic letters would stick the best with the magnets inside the tiles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We are now a family of 5!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgARIxxibI6GdaUXfNVVLmmXivihbaVQC8g9OVwL2Ryeoync6ZDrmfMrtTw-QA4bHMyYuqGF6Q025MIbsianedOdaBdwP2oXjYnEd5KcIc-uiiEeGUs6Ak7oqW8ewV4yRsbknFYKF5UCg/s1600/IMG_3744.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgARIxxibI6GdaUXfNVVLmmXivihbaVQC8g9OVwL2Ryeoync6ZDrmfMrtTw-QA4bHMyYuqGF6Q025MIbsianedOdaBdwP2oXjYnEd5KcIc-uiiEeGUs6Ak7oqW8ewV4yRsbknFYKF5UCg/s640/IMG_3744.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have to say it's not as hard as I anticipated. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now let me clarify that statement: it actually is ALOT of work and I'm REALLY tired and the juggling is ENDLESS, but with the right perspective it's manageable.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
See my post about <a href="http://jewishhomeschoolnyc.blogspot.com/2013/06/thoughtful-thursdays-re-framing.html" target="_blank">re-framing complaining</a> for more information. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Its been a smoother transition to baby #3 for several reasons:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. I am not returning to nearly as many hours of work as I was with my other kids</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. My older kids are in camp for a good portion of the day.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and I think the most important reason:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. I am not resentful of the changes a new baby brings.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I remember with my first child I was resentful that I had to hold and nurse her so much. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was angry that I wasn't able to eat a meal like a civilized human. I often ate cold food with one hand. Or if I had both hands available I worried about spilling food on the little head that peaked out of the baby carrier.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was frustrated that I couldn't leave my house when I wanted to </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and of course all I wanted to do was SLEEP!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These feelings lessened with my second daughter and now with my son, these feelings although present at times have nearly disappeared.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still hold and nurse him almost all day</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still eat like a caveman: I just finished eating cold sweet potato right out of the skin--I practically slurped it out :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am still pretty home bound</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still don't sleep</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But the difference is I have willingly accepted this new reality. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The work is hard, but like my mother says, "Be thankful that you can do it!"</div>

I originally saw this idea posted on <a href="http://queenvannacreations.com/blog/2012/02/01/ice-ballons/" target="_blank">QueenVannaCreations</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiviZ8gQge3jKIQ99_732x4ShMTx1FQcDAmJr0mpRFSrQgE6cnJYvXY0VdOLUi5OIyzg4T3ZLQew-pGZfzfQK23kXcYhUG7uOhPledVAnJdEzY2g0cAJad4ySgfFGHzRCPxmerlgKYFqg/s1600/IMG_3808.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiviZ8gQge3jKIQ99_732x4ShMTx1FQcDAmJr0mpRFSrQgE6cnJYvXY0VdOLUi5OIyzg4T3ZLQew-pGZfzfQK23kXcYhUG7uOhPledVAnJdEzY2g0cAJad4ySgfFGHzRCPxmerlgKYFqg/s640/IMG_3808.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I altered the recipe by using <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Crayola-8-Ounce-Artista-Washable-Tempera/dp/B0011WJAW0/ref=sr_1_5?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1375375428&sr=1-5&keywords=Crayola+Washable+Tempera+Paint+blue" target="_blank">Crayola Washable Tempera Paint</a> instead of food coloring. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You will need:</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Balloons- any latex kind</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Washable paint</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. Kitchen faucet</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. Freezer</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To do:</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. squeeze a little paint into the balloon</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. stretch neck of balloon over faucet and slowly fill with water</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. Once the size of a grapefruit, turn off water and tie balloon</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4 Place balloon in freezer overnight.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. Once frozen, cut balloon and peel off</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What you do with your frozen creations is up to you:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
play soccer, bowling, hide little trinkets in them before freezing or just watch them melt in the bath tub like we did:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We made a brain hat to show our girls that our brain has different parts and different jobs to do. It is the control center for our body.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We found this brain hat template through Scholastic's Human Body- Easy Make and Learn Projects. It is full of manipulatives and models to help kids learn about the human body.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Love this set of Hebrew Letter Flash Cards we got at our local Amazing Savings Store.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">You can find a similar item on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Aleph-Bet-Flashcards-Vowel-Wheels/dp/B000VHI7WA" target="_blank">Amazon</a>.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">They are big and come with an easy to turn wheel with Hebrew vowels under each letter.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Note: This set doesn't have the phonetic transliterations on the back of the cards. Made more for a Hebrew speaking teacher to help a child or adult to learn Hebrew.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It seems to make sense to teach the letters with the vowel at the same time. This way the child is already "reading" Hebrew just by joining for example the /b/ sound from the Bet with the /ee/ sound from the chereek underneath it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The truth is we have not been that systematic with our teaching of Hebrew sounds and would love to hear from others about the order they use to teach Hebrew reading and writing.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I have to admit that I have been guilty of telling a few too many white lies to my kids.</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">This was recently made very apparent to me while </span><span style="font-size: large;">struggling</span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> to convince my 2 year old to go down for a nap, my older daughter whispered in my ear, "tell her that I'm going to take a nap too".</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;">AAAAHHH!! How long can we lecture our children on the importance of telling the truth if we are fibbers ourselves?<br />Children do not respond well to the "do as I say, not as I do approach", nobody does.<br /><br />We lie at different times and for different reason. Some are justifiable due to child's age/maturation. <br /><br />But, I do not want to risk losing my child's trust over my silly lies. <br />Usually there is a valuable lesson in giving them the real reason why they must come right now, work hard to be a great dancer, and not watch so much TV.</span></td></tr>

In preparing for our upcoming unit on human anatomy, I created a play dough brain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Using the recipe I blogged about <a href="http://jewishhomeschoolnyc.blogspot.com/2013/06/wild-card-wednesday-popping-good-time.html" target="_blank">here</a>, I made a really quick and simple no bake homemade playdough. Just add more flour if texture is too sticky.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY-QDPeNUGKAkIL_anbMAlun2Y-KENOhrfGSjEJZdAsDUEeMcl8oOb51spTRZgLSjZGaebYbS25A-LfFiU0RlAOmBitIpq78bCyiov55KB7RuAXfKG0PBwbRzREZQAOOprdL6B6-Qi-A/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY-QDPeNUGKAkIL_anbMAlun2Y-KENOhrfGSjEJZdAsDUEeMcl8oOb51spTRZgLSjZGaebYbS25A-LfFiU0RlAOmBitIpq78bCyiov55KB7RuAXfKG0PBwbRzREZQAOOprdL6B6-Qi-A/s640/009.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Started out by covering a ramekin with play dough</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg857ykpsFQQbwA479ndJvRRPxamL-owrsOwtq4hT8xcyzbjAAQuQ07ZwSQO5pbCTczLiQ-Nii60fsYqIl3SAo9jhAKjwuTJIHFhWNyOOcKnQi88v_ERhz50pxb5jefvRKKIbME2SqCeQ/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg857ykpsFQQbwA479ndJvRRPxamL-owrsOwtq4hT8xcyzbjAAQuQ07ZwSQO5pbCTczLiQ-Nii60fsYqIl3SAo9jhAKjwuTJIHFhWNyOOcKnQi88v_ERhz50pxb5jefvRKKIbME2SqCeQ/s640/012.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Roll dough into long snake like ropes and loop them in sections across one half of brain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgHguT_tCJj2DBWXCDtP_TM1IzstaoRNsXzt-9tCQXovOj7B_2ibZgKVj2mHlsH46T60L53GZkfPNFtyJoiTpPDY-4YbIRqI4tQa2eBNviEPv70kV0PPh6V-e9mWJTAYwMXRza7OY5WQ/s1600/021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgHguT_tCJj2DBWXCDtP_TM1IzstaoRNsXzt-9tCQXovOj7B_2ibZgKVj2mHlsH46T60L53GZkfPNFtyJoiTpPDY-4YbIRqI4tQa2eBNviEPv70kV0PPh6V-e9mWJTAYwMXRza7OY5WQ/s640/021.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Continue same process on the other side and your brain is ready to go. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I froze our brain so that it would harden and the kids could play with it without mushing it. Check back on Sunday for our investigation into the brain's functions.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

They preferred the East Jordan since the land was fertile pastureland for their cattle</span></span><span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><span style="line-height: 25px;">. Moshe is initially upset, but eventually makes a compromise with them. They can stay east of the Jordan on the condition that they do not abandon their brethren in their conquest of Israel and that they lead them in the battle. </span></span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><span style="line-height: 25px;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Moshe proves again to be a leader who is sensitive to the needs of his people while maintaining his position among them.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><span style="line-height: 25px;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">This event has got me thinking about all the compromising and deal making that goes on in our home. We are definitely not the "because I said so household" nor are we the "do whatever you want family."</span></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><span style="line-height: 25px;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><span style="line-height: 25px;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Finding the right balance in between those extremes is often the struggle. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I came across the </span><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/C0971909-165F-46F5-B209-F3425A90C5E8/0/p_12_common_core_learning_standards_mathematics_final.pdf" target="_blank">NY State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics</a> and was </span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">looking through the Prek and Kindergarten math standards. I will likely use them as a rough guide in thinking about the upcoming homeschool year. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">One of my favorite goals is: </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">"Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1)." </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Simply stated: understanding that to get to any given number there are several combinations that will get you there. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I appreciate this goal for its focus on truly analyzing and understanding numbers. Kids will learn that that there are lots of ways to make a number. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><a href="http://mathcoachscorner.blogspot.com/2012/01/composing-and-decomposing-numbers.html" target="_blank">Math coach's corner</a> had a fun way to play with this concept:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; line-height: 27px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">1. Give your child a target number and they count out that many counters (jelly beans, marbles, etc. )</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; line-height: 27px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">2. Child covers her eyes, while you hide some of the counters under a cup or bowl.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; line-height: 27px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">3. Child opens her eyes and tries to figure out how many counters are under the rock. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;"> 4. Take turns being the hider and guesser.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">So for example, child counts out 6 marbles, you hide 2, child only sees 4 and has to figure out that 2 are missing to add up to 6. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">If your child is ready for it, you can have them work on writing out equations for the combinations they discover. So for our example your list would look like this:</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">4+2=6</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">5+1=5</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">2+4=6</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">1+5=6</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">6+0=6</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">0+6=6</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;">3+3=6</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 27px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

Another post inspired by <a href="http://www.growingajeweledrose.com/2013/06/summer-fun-funky-frozen-treat-day.html" target="_blank">Growing a Jeweled Rose</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think after today's post we will give the whole baking soda/vinegar thing a rest and move on to the human body.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But today we had fun playing with fizzing ice paint.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qM0iteptxRNGP4P9Y0ZhhB4PX3X9kA4eKUuNKt7qn03xCg5xhBDjaPVoum0SvQxkWx0-_KgLUcFpfp_o1KhMZa4uTFBiJLIOpmbkWjg9253awYzV2N4LNt_sl0_MWb1ow2bioFehvg/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qM0iteptxRNGP4P9Y0ZhhB4PX3X9kA4eKUuNKt7qn03xCg5xhBDjaPVoum0SvQxkWx0-_KgLUcFpfp_o1KhMZa4uTFBiJLIOpmbkWjg9253awYzV2N4LNt_sl0_MWb1ow2bioFehvg/s640/012.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First we filled<a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60138113/" target="_blank"> ice trays</a> halfway with baking soda.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Important note: Results would have been better if I diluted the baking powder in water first. Our ingredients didn't freeze as an even mixture and we had reduced fizzing once we added the vinegar at the end.</div>

Until we realized, duh, we should be searching in Hebrew.<br /><br />So we got hebrew letter stickers to put on our keyboard from Ebay for like a buck and switched our computer's language to Hebrew and tada so many more hits!!<br /><br />Currently out favorite find is יוטוב לילדים ( youtube for children). Here is the link: <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.project.ytfkids&hl=en">https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.project.ytfkids&hl=en</a><br />Its an App we downloaded and our kids can now watch shows like Dennis the Menace in Hebrew. <br />Beware there are tons of ads.<br /><br />Another favorite of ours is <a href="http://sefer-li.net/">http://sefer-li.net/</a><br />It is a website with an extensive list of free downloadable Hebrew stories for kids.<br />If the link comes up in gibberish, you need to change the encoding of your browser by clicking on Tools, then Encoding, then Hebrew. That's how it works for Google, not sure about other browsers.<br /><br />Lastly check out <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/storyly-for-ipad-your-digital/id540649061?mt=8">https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/storyly-for-ipad-your-digital/id540649061?mt=8</a>.<br />It's an App that comes with 2 free Hebrew books for kids and then its $10.00 a month for unlimited access to their Hebrew children's books library. That's a little steep for my blood, but we are enjoying our 2 free stories for now.<br /><br />I would greatly appreciate other suggestions as to where I can find more Hebrew media for my kids.<br /><br /><br /><br /></span></td></tr>

Let me start this post about quitting to complain with some good old fashion complaining. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For so many of us reading blogs and scrolling through Facebook and other social media sites leads us down the road of gawking at other people's beautiful self portraits, beautiful children, beautiful vacations, beautiful homes, etc... It makes it so easy for us to feel anything but "less than". When I blog I post pictures of my crafts, my projects, my ideas, etc so others can be inspired as I have been from other bloggers. What I don't post are the tantrums, the messes, the fighting, the crying (mine and the childrens') that occurs during or between these events. I have thought about taking pictures of our craziness and sharing it with you all, but it doesn't feel right to expose my family at our most vulnerable times to the mass public. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But in case anyone who reads my blog has been disillusioned about our life, here is a little glimpse into what really goes on "behind the scenes". </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This morning, I was awakened by the sounds of children giggling and playing so beautifully in their bedroom. This sounded so wonderful, I thought "Yes! I can lie in bed a few more minutes". Their giggling soon turned into screaming and crying when my 2 year old dropped a chair on her sister who was lying on the ground and gave her a busted lip and bleeding gums. Said child then refused ice or any form of help and just continued to scream. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On to morning bath time (because I was too tired to bathe them the night before)- one child gets out of bath first causing other child to cry for 15 minutes that she wanted to get out of bath first.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All the while, I am trying to get them dressed, fed, and put in one of the many loads of laundry because "someone" crawled into my bed in the middle of night and peed all over my sheets.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now it's time to leave for first day of camp, child runs around house like a wild turkey refusing to use the potty and put on shoes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Flash forward to after camp when one child bites another child because "she pushed a button on my iPAD" or when little sister decided she wanted to throw all the blueberries on the floor and when mommy said NO, she had a hysterical tantrum yelling that she REALLY NEEDS to throw all the blueberries on the floor and STEP ON THEM!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I imagine many of you have had similar crazy in your homes as well. If not, please write a book and I will read it!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ok, so now the question is how do we manage to stay sane and the parents we always imagined we would be amidst all this crazy. So I don't have THE answer, but I do have a suggestion:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Happiness comes when we stop complaining about the troubles we have and offer thanks for all the troubles we don't have" height="375" src="http://quotes-lover.com/wp-content/uploads/Happiness-comes-when-we-stop-complaining-about-the-troubles-we-have-and-offer-thanks-for-all-the-troubles-we-dont-have.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This cheesy quote above pretty much sums up what I have been thinking about lately and has helped me get through alot of these tough moments.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I can have the same amount of crazy happen on two different days and come out of one day feeling like a total failure as a parent and on the other day feeling so proud for how I handled things. When I analyze what factors affected my reactions to each day, it all came down to perspective.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The thought process on the miserable days would go something like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: left;">My house is a mess!!</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">I can't get any quiet time!!</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Why are there so many dishes in the sink?!</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">My children are nuts!!</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Contrast to the thought process on my better days:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>I am lucky to even have a home full of stuff and can afford to own all these luxuries!!</li>
<li>My children can be loud because they are healthy!!</li>
<li>There are dishes because we have the means to eat 3+ meals a day!!</li>
<li>I have children!!</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still have more miserable days than I would like to admit, but re-framing has been really helpful in decreasing the frequency and intensity of the bad days. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If we can re-frame some of the negative thoughts that run through our minds and make us so angry, maybe we can see that many of the things we complain about are actually privileges. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Our kids love playing with the light table at our local children's museum so we tried to replicate it at home.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">To make our low budget light table you will need a clear storage bin with cover. We used the Rubbermaid 41qt storage bin with cover (about $13.00 at Target):</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><img src="http://target.scene7.com/s7viewers/dhtml/images/spacer.gif" /><img src="http://target.scene7.com/s7viewers/dhtml/images/spacer.gif" /><img src="http://target.scene7.com/s7viewers/dhtml/images/spacer.gif" /><img height="400" src="http://c.shld.net/rpx/i/s/pi/mp/22582/2720622305?src=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.picsuitcase.com%2FAImages%2FHome%2F87a01c9f-f6c9-4870-9216-2a1fde146cd6.jpg&d=259c5b601bbe86c2acca3ccad12da737f93edebe" width="400" /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I then lined it with black paper to keep the light reflected in the box, although my husband just told me that white paper would have been a better choice. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"> Place a<span style="text-align: center;">ny LED light in the box. These were the ones we had used for our </span><a href="http://jewishhomeschoolnyc.blogspot.com/2012/10/winter-wonderland-1st-birthday-party.html" style="text-align: center;" target="_blank">Winter Onederland Party</a><span style="text-align: center;">.</span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I lined the cover with parchment paper so the light wouldn't be too bright for the girls' eyes.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Here is the light table all ready to go.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicaBW6Y9lZEyM6-su4ocjOnKUl8ybXhUn8m61qTtKUG5_SI-EBeRfz9RIsEqHGY27Ab04-OIWY-i5pNU8oTUzcAo9covb24JFDPVL85013ZAH1f_4uJcElBRixcHgEXStpyiYxMGMLJg/s1600/019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicaBW6Y9lZEyM6-su4ocjOnKUl8ybXhUn8m61qTtKUG5_SI-EBeRfz9RIsEqHGY27Ab04-OIWY-i5pNU8oTUzcAo9covb24JFDPVL85013ZAH1f_4uJcElBRixcHgEXStpyiYxMGMLJg/s640/019.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Our Magna Tiles look pretty cool on the light box. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">By the way, Magna Tiles are AWESOME, but rather pricey. $120 on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Magna-Tiles-Clear-Colors-100-Piece/dp/B000CBSNRY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372305229&sr=8-1&keywords=magnatiles" target="_blank">Amazon for a set of 100 pieces</a>. I still can't get over how much we spent on this toy, but the possibilities are endless and it will easily grow with my kids for many years to come.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Great for little ones- it's a very low frustration toy. The pieces hold together well, unlike blocks and come apart easily, unlike Legos.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">As kids grow, their imaginations can take them anywhere with this open ended toy.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I also played around with putting my black light in the storage bin:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgnBRsHcYpWCL46Bmq6DUShXutxmCzl8fM38bShNNbT4CKe_5j8F92p2EXjpKBGDTSd5nesHc3ZBmm4eyjro_ZRPA37vMr2Lk_m9rpFVTRam5I7qwIKjNY4-S4trhpR-OlhVdkTnnh_A/s1600/034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgnBRsHcYpWCL46Bmq6DUShXutxmCzl8fM38bShNNbT4CKe_5j8F92p2EXjpKBGDTSd5nesHc3ZBmm4eyjro_ZRPA37vMr2Lk_m9rpFVTRam5I7qwIKjNY4-S4trhpR-OlhVdkTnnh_A/s640/034.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The results were equally fun. The green MagnaTiles glowed the best. We made different configurations with glow sticks (don't crack them) and just for fun we put our <a href="http://jewishhomeschoolnyc.blogspot.com/2013/06/sunday-science-glow-in-dark-potions-and.html" target="_blank">highlighter water</a> on the table. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Next time I might follow the suggestion found <a href="http://www.growingajeweledrose.com/2012/03/black-light-sticky-table.html" target="_blank">here</a> to cover the table with contact paper and have kids stick glow sticks and other fluorescent items onto the contact paper for some sticky fun.</span></div>
